A Look At Security & Energy

Short Link: http://jsmtech.org/security-and-energy
Read Time: 5 min

Ever thought of what would happen if the United States of America’s power grids went offline for an extending period of time? Have you ever gotten nightmares about technology ceasing to exist as we know it? (Okay, that’s one of my nightmares.)

Mushroom Cloud of a Nuclear Bomb

Those are some very interesting questions that I’ve had myself for a while. Recently, however, for a debate club I’m part of, I was assigned the job of presenting on energy and security. I’ve attached my PowerPoint slides to the end of this post because I believe that this is a really interesting, and scary, topic that should be discussed way more than we discuss it now. A natural disaster or even a malicious actor could potentially cut off power and permanently destroy every single electronic device in America.

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of watching a movie called “Mickey Matson” on PureFlix. The movie was about some crazy – modern – pirate who hated technology (breaks my heart:{) and wanted to destroy it. What does he do? He decides to use an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) to destroy it all. EMP’s have the potential to be abused.

EMP’s are… well, I’m getting ahead of myself.

Let’s Define A Few Key Terms

Before we start this debate…

Let’s define some key terms so we are all on the same page.

Woah, these are some serious stuff!

The Grid… Our Most Critical Resource

What would happen if the power went out for an extended amount of time in America? Well, the former CIA director predicts that almost 2/3 to 90% of the US population would die off in one year. Yes, just one year.

Aaron Larson. An article published by the Power Magazine. June 22nd, 2015. https://www.powermag.com/expect-death-if-pulse-event-hits-power-grid/

“Johnson, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, posed questions to witnesses testifying on Capitol Hill before his committee. He asked R. James Woolsley, chairman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, what would happen to society if the electrical grid were to be down for an extended period of time, such as a year or two, following an EMP event?  Woolsley [Foundation for Defense of Democracies and former director of the Central Intelligence Agency] responded, “It’s briefly dealt with in the commission report of [2008]. There are essentially two estimates on how many people would die from hunger, from starvation, from lack of water, and from social disruption. One estimate is that within a year or so, two-thirds of the United States population would die. The other estimate is that within a year or so, 90% of the U.S. population would die. We’re talking about total devastation. We’re not talking about just a regular catastrophe.”

What Causes An EMP/GMD/CME?

Natural causes of Electromagnetic Pulses could be from:

  1. Solar Flares
  2. Static Energy
  3. But most commonly lighting strikes

Human causes would include (but not be limmited to):

  1. Nuclear EMP’s (basically an enemy detonates a nuclear device 20 KM above the United States. All devices will be fried.)
  2. EMP guns
  3. Microwaves :)

PowerPoint Slides

Here’s a copy of the slides I used for my presentation. The potential threat from EMP’s should be common knowledge – please spread the word! (https://www.jsmtech.org/media/uploads/2019/09/30/Security-and-Energy.pptx)

Conclusion

The EMP, GMD, and CME threats are real. If we don’t take action now to protect ourselves, the attacks of 911 will be dwarfed compared to what a natural disaster or malicious enemy could do. Spread the word and keep America safe!
